3 Actions for Detoxing your Environments

Mindfulness and intention are required to keep a home and workspace clean and safe. Do you have newborns, children, pets, and/or family members living with you? Is your workspace supporting your wellness or silently undermining it? Do you desire to take control of your health? Are you looking for simple adjustments that will help you reduce your exposure to toxins? Do you desire to up-level your Sustainability Footprint and deepen your care of Mother Earth?

By focusing on one area at a time and implementing natural and intentional changes, you begin your journey of providing a safe haven for everyone in the household and workspace. Read on to discover 3 actions for detoxing your home and work environments.

Focus on High Priority Areas

High Priority areas are those areas that are most likely to contain and store chemically laden cleansers and odor control products. These areas are also most likely to produce unhealthy odors and fumes.

In the home, High Priority areas include the kitchen, the laundry area, and the bathrooms(s). Take a look at the “cleaning” products stored in these areas. Read the labels, especially the Warning label! Do you require a Hazmat suit just to clean these areas with these products? YUK!

In the workplace, High Priority areas include the kitchen/breakroom, the bathrooms, and open work areas such as bullpens and cubicles. The air flow within these common areas carries toxins, germs, and odors to all who share the space. Add to that individual perfumes, colognes, and air fresheners and you have a noxious unhealthy environment. “Cleaning” products in the work environment may contain harsher chemicals than those found in the home; as commercial/industrial strength products require MSDSs (Material Safety Data Sheets) to be kept on file for these products!

Action: Acquire the Knowledge
Research and bring alternative solutions to the conversation, whether at home or in the work environment. Start by focusing on sustainable changes in the High Priority areas.

Swap out Toxic “Cleaners”

As mentioned above, common household and commercial “cleaners” are laden with toxic chemicals. However, have no fear; there are affordable alternatives available. YAY!

Essential oils are fragrant concentrated plant extracts distilled to bring the power of Nature into your home. Essential oils have the capability to enhance your mood, cleanse your environment, support your health and well-being, and create a harmonious relationship with Nature.* When your energy is harmonized with the energy of Nature, you feel confident you are creating for yourself the optimum relationship to thrive.

In addition to essential oils, there are many common household products that can double down as effective natural cleansers, especially when combined with essential oils. Some of these products include white vinegar, baking soda, castile soap, Epsom salts, washing soda, and distilled water. Many DIY recipes include these ingredients.

Action: Live the Life
Choose one area of the home or workplace to start (High Priority area). Decide how you want to replace hazardous products; with natural/organic commercially produced alternatives or create natural DIY replacements. Maybe you want to incorporate both!

Consider Energy Cleansing and Alignment

Cleansing your environment is not just about it’s appearance, air quality, and the products you use to maintain your environment.
Cleansing also applies to the energy of a space.

The energy of a space goes beyond air quality and encompasses the creative life force energy, or Qi, and how it moves through the space and how it influences the occupants of that space. Are there residual energy patterns remaining from previous occupants or visiting guests? Are there areas in the space where energy stagnates? Are there open pathways for the energy to meander or does it enter into and exit from the space too quickly? Do you feel uncomfortable in your space despite it looking beautiful and being clean?

Feng shui describes how we can leverage the benefits of this energy as it enters, moves throughout, and exits your space. Simply stated, feng shui aligns the natal energy that was captured at the time the building was constructed. This energy doesn’t change, even when occupants change ownership of the space. Once aligned, using the 5 Elements, this energy can support you in creating optimal health, prosperity, and relationships. Good feng shui itself does not create health or wealth; rather good feng shui supports your efforts and energy as you work toward these goals. Smudging is a practice of cleansing the stagnant or lingering energy of a space. Typically, White Sage or Palo Santo is burned and the smoke is wafted throughout the space. Sometimes, rattling and drumming are incorporated into clearing practices.

Energy clearing can also be performed remotely through a Distance Energy Healing and Clearing practice such as Reiki. See the Services page for more information on Distance Energy Healing and Clearing.

There are DIY tutorials on the internet on how to perform a space clearing. However, I do recommend having a professional perform the initial clearing before moving into a new home/office. Additionally, a professional is a must after a traumatic event occurs within the space or when you feel something is not right within a space. Trust your intuition on this one!

It is also good practice to create a personal ritual for space clearing that you perform daily before beginning your day in your work space and again before leaving. This can be as simple as spraying White Sage, Palo Santo, or other protection blend around your work space and saying a simple prayer of thanks or gratitude for your clean space. I particularly like the sprays available from Shamans Dawn. I use the Sage, Palo Santo, Spirit, and Protection sprays. I also craft my own signature spray.

Action: Create Daily Rituals
Begin paying attention to how you feel in your home and work environment. Does your energy level drop when you enter a particular area? Do you sense a sudden chill, hot flash, or goosebumps etc.? Are there areas that you avoid but aren’t sure why? These are possible signs that the energy of your space requires clearing and aligning.

Create a unique energy clearing spray or purchase a commercially prepared spray to use before beginning work and before leaving work. Regularly smudge your home by burning White Sage, Palo Santo or a using a smudge spray. Maintain a clutter free space so Qi, life force energy, is able to flow freely and remain vibrant and supportive.
